The Celtics are not looking forward to the end of Kevin Garnett’s Hall of Fame career. It’s coming………they hope it is later rather than sooner since the obvious current player on the roster as it is constructed would be “Big Baby” Glen Davis. While he has proven to be a valuable backup to the “Big Ticket” when injured, Davis has constantly pushed GM Danny Ainge to the brink of ripping his hair out with his constant off the court issues and mind numbing comments.
I guess it wasn’t enough for Ainge and Coach Doc Rivers to take news that Davis had broken a finger at the start of the season by punching a former HS teammate in a disagreement and will miss 6 weeks. Apparently he was bored since in a story first leaked by Chris Broussard of ESPN the Magazine, Davis informed us that he can see himself on the gridiron, competing in the NFL after his retirement from basketball. I’m sure Celtics management couldn’t be happier that their injured power forward is spouting off at the mouth about retirement plans in only his 3rd season out of Louisiana State University.
The thought of Davis in an NFL uniform actually isn’t that far fetched because of two reasons. At 6-9 and a supposed 260+ pounds, Davis would be an imposing force in the mold of William “Refrigerator” Perry during the 80’s. The other reason is the fact that Davis was also a very talented two way player at University Laboratory High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He starred as a defensive end, defensive tackle, and……………tailback. He eventually chose the hardwood over the gridiron in order to become an All American at LSU.
His high school coaches thought so highly of him that they made comparisons between Davis’ game to that of Hall of Famer Reggie White because of his nimbleness on his feet, undoubtedly because of his skills as a basketball player.
Davis proved invaluable to Boston in last season’s playoffs, when filling in for the injured Garnett, by averaging more than 15 ppg and 5 rebounds, which earned him a 2 year, $6 million dollar deal. I’m sure that the Celtics hope Davis not only keeps his mouth shut, but steps his game up once he returns from injury, and accomplishes a few of his NBA goals before making the jump to the NFL.
